You’ve done the hard part — driven traffic to your store, convinced someone to browse, and got them to add something to their cart. Then they leave. No purchase, no explanation, just gone. Checkout abandonment is where a significant chunk of e-commerce revenue disappears, and most of it is avoidable with better user experience design.

Audit Your Checkout Flow First

Before changing anything, understand what’s actually happening. Google Tag Manager paired with Google Analytics 4 lets you set up a checkout funnel report that shows you exactly where in the process people are dropping off. That data tells you where to focus. Guessing wastes time.

Simplify the Form

Every field you ask a customer to fill in is a small decision point where they can give up. Go through your checkout form and ask, for each field: do we actually need this to process the order? Common fields that can be eliminated or made optional: company name, address line 2, phone number, and order notes. Also look at whether your checkout spans multiple pages when it doesn’t need to — a single-page checkout consistently outperforms multi-step flows for straightforward purchases.

Enable Guest Checkout

Requiring account creation before purchase is one of the most reliably conversion-killing decisions a store can make. First-time customers don’t want to sign up for another account — they want to buy something. Let them. Invite account creation after the order is confirmed, when they’re already happy and have a reason to want order tracking. WooCommerce makes this straightforward to enable.

Show the Total Cost Early

Surprise costs at the final checkout step are the leading cause of abandonment. Show estimated shipping costs on product pages or in the cart before checkout begins. If you offer free shipping above a threshold, show a progress indicator in the cart — “Add $12 more for free shipping” is a conversion driver, not just an informational note.

Optimize for Mobile

More than half of e-commerce traffic comes from mobile devices, and mobile checkout abandonment rates are higher than desktop across every category. Test your checkout on your own phone. Are the buttons large enough to tap accurately? Does the keyboard cover input fields? Is autocomplete working so customers don’t have to type their full address on a tiny keyboard?

Add Express Payment Options

Apple Pay and Google Pay let mobile customers complete a purchase with a single biometric confirmation — no typing card numbers, no filling out forms. Stripe and WooPayments both support express checkout buttons that can appear directly on product pages, in the cart, and at checkout.

Reinforce Trust at the Payment Step

The moment customers are asked to enter payment details is when trust anxiety peaks. Make sure your checkout page includes visible trust signals: SSL padlock, security badges near the payment field, a clear return policy link, and contact information that confirms there’s a real business behind the store.

Recover What You Can’t Prevent

Even with an optimized checkout, some abandonment is inevitable. This is where MarTech pays off directly. A Klaviyo abandoned cart email sequence — triggered automatically when someone leaves without completing a purchase — can recover 5–15% of those lost sales. Combined with retargeting ads through Google or Meta, you create multiple recovery touchpoints that keep your store in front of warm prospects across channels.

At Interactive Design Group, we handle both sides — building custom WooCommerce checkouts optimized for conversion and setting up the MarTech stack that recovers what doesn’t convert on the first visit. If your checkout is losing sales it should be keeping, get in touch.
